Eating foods that will help us look better and feel better are really up to us.  Having more energy or losing a few extra pounds can all come down to what we choose to eat.  If you are trying to lose weight, tone up or just increase your energy or fitness levels, a healthier lifestyle begins with nutrition.

Here are some easy to follow tips for getting good nutrition:

  1. Do not skip meals or avoid eating.  It is best to have 5-6 meals or snacks, every 3-4 hours.
  2. Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day.  Not only will you be flushing out toxins, drinking a glass of water before a meal can prevent you from over eating at meals.
  3. Eat red, yellow, orange, and green vegetables.  Vegetables are low in calories and loaded with vitamins and antioxidants.  A great source of fiber.
  4. Eat a variety of fruits.  Fruits are low in calories, high in water and a good source of fiber.  Loaded with antioxidants and vitamins.  Fruit can help to satisfy your “sweet tooth”.
  5. Make time for breakfast.  Helps fuel your body for the day, and gets your metabolism going.
  6. Eat lean proteins at every meal.  Eating lean proteins help to build and maintain healthy muscles.  They also take longer to digest, so you feel full longer.
  7. Eat whole grains.  Whole grains fuel and energize your body.
  8. Watch the fat. Choose low fat, or fat free foods when possible.  The “right” kind of fat is essential to keeping your body healthy.
  9. Drink in moderation.  Alcohol not only has tons of calories, but is a toxin that affects the tissues and organs of the body.
  10. Portion control.  Watching how much you eat as just as important as the types of food you eat.
  11. Fresh over packaged.  Packaged meat may have lower nutrition and higher calories.
  12. Treat yourself.  We all deserve a treat, so go ahead.  Just watch your serving sizes and how many treats you allow yourself.
  13. Cut out the soda.  Cut down sugar intake on soda, coffee and milk.
  14. Exercise.  This increases your metabolism, so do some exercise every day.

With a few small changes, you can start living a more nutritious lifestyle.
